Three University of California San Diego professors in the Division of Biological Sciences have been named Faculty Scholars by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Simons Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Honorees include Professor Samara Reck-Peterson and Professor Gürol Süel as well as Associate Adjunct Professor Clodagh O'Shea.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Simons Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today named University of California San Diego Molecular Biology Professor Gürol Süel an HHMI-Simons Faculty Scholar. Süel will receive a total of $1.5 million over five years in support of his studies on how bacterial cells communicate with each other via electrical signals, similar to the way neurons transmit messages in the brain.

The Chancellor’s Community Advisory Board at the University of California San Diego is composed of 27 local leaders and professionals who work to foster and strengthen positive relationships between the campus and community. A new chair and six new members have joined the 2016-17 board.

Today, the White House will be honoring University of California San Diego student Meghan Yap, one of 10 students from across the country being recognized as an “It’s On Us White House Champion of Change.” The event is part of a series of campaigns happening around the country in recognition of National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.

Six UC San Diego faculty members will be honored at the 42nd annual Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Awards for going above and beyond to make a positive impact in their teaching, research and service. The recognition ceremony will be held Thursday, April 14 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine.

On Tuesday, April 5, the campus and local community are invited to attend the free premiere of “Fallen Star: Finding Home,” a 50-minute film by artist Do Ho Suh. The documentary tells the behind-the-scenes story of the planning, engineering and installation of “Fallen Star,” the 18th addition to UC San Diego’s Stuart Collection, an ongoing program of commissioned, site-specific sculptures.

The free, two-hour tours highlight the history of the university and its role in the biotech boom; the evolution of UC San Diego’s six colleges; its green building designs and strategies; and other notable points of interest across the 1,200-acre campus.

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center at the University of California, San Diego will host Q Camp on September 23, a day-long program for incoming LGBT freshman, transfer and graduate students as well as returning students who are newly out. The goal is to introduce students to LGBT life on campus as well as resources that support equity, diversity and inclusion.

More than 300 undergraduates will present faculty-mentored research to peers, professors and the general public at the annual Summer Research Conference on Aug. 13 at the University of California, San Diego. This year’s event will feature presentations focusing on a range of topics including earthworm-inspired robotics and the early cotton industry’s influence on border culture to the blood brain barrier and sea spray aerosols.
