‘Dinner in the Library’ to Benefit UC San Diego Libraries Sept. 15

The University of California, San Diego Libraries will host their annual “Dinner in the Library” Sept. 15 to benefit the Libraries’ collections and services. Held in the university’s iconic Geisel Library, the event will feature cocktails, a silent auction, dinner and a provocative talk on “San Diego and the Technology Revolution: The Next 50 Years,” by Mary Walshok, associate vice chancellor for Public Programs and dean of University Extension at UC San Diego. Walshok, a recognized thought leader on job creation, workforce readiness and the new innovation economy, is co-author of the recent book, “Closing America’s Job Gap.” Local philanthropist Charlie Robins will also be honored at the dinner with the Geisel Citation for Library Philanthropy, in recognition of his counsel and financial contributions to the UC San Diego Libraries.

Proceeds will help the UC San Diego Libraries meet their greatest needs, including the ability to purchase research materials, utilize technological advancements for information delivery, implement new user services and more.  In light of state budget cuts, private support for the UC San Diego Libraries is more important than ever before.

“The UC San Diego Libraries play a key role in supporting and advancing the university’s research, teaching, patient care and public service missions,” said Brian E.C. Schottlaender, the Audrey Geisel University Librarian.  “Private support is essential to ensuring that the Libraries continue to meet the needs of the campus community, as well as maintain their place as one of the top public academic research libraries in the nation.”

The UC San Diego Libraries, ranked among the top 20 public academic research libraries in the nation, provide access to more than 7 million digital and print volumes, journals and multimedia materials to meet the knowledge demands of scholars, students and members of the public. The Libraries’ vast online resources and services are accessed almost 90,000 times daily via the UC San Diego Libraries’ website.

A limited number of tickets for “Dinner in the Library” are available for $225. Guests will enjoy cocktails and a silent auction from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Dinner will be served in the Geisel Library at 7 p.m., with a talk by Walshok and the awarding of the Geisel Citation to follow.
