Microrobot-packed Pill Shows Promise for Treating Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Mice

June 26, 2024

Engineers have developed a pill that releases microscopic robots, or microrobots, into the colon to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The experimental treatment, given orally, has shown success in mice. It significantly reduced IBD symptoms and promoted the healing of damaged colon tissue without causing toxic side effects.

Swimming Microrobots Deliver Cancer-fighting Drugs to Metastatic Lung Tumors in Mice

June 12, 2024

…San Diego engineers have developed microscopic robots, known as microrobots, that swim through the lungs to deliver cancer-fighting medication directly to metastatic tumors. This approach has shown promise in mice, where it inhibited the growth and spread of tumors that had metastasized to the lungs, thereby boosting survival rates compared…

Tiny Swimming Robots Treat Deadly Pneumonia in Mice

September 22, 2022

UC San Diego engineers developed microrobots, that can swim around in the lungs, deliver medication and be used to clear up life-threatening cases of bacterial pneumonia. In mice, the microrobots safely eliminated pneumonia-causing bacteria in the lungs and resulted in 100% survival.

These Microscopic Fish are 3D-Printed to do More Than Swim

August 25, 2015

…3D printing technology they developed to manufacture multipurpose fish-shaped microrobots — called microfish — that are efficient swimmers, are chemically powered and magnetically controlled. These proof-of-concept synthetic microfish will inspire a new generation of “smart” microrobots that have diverse capabilities such as detoxification, sensing and directed drug delivery.

UC San Diego Launches Robotics Institute

October 29, 2015

…research teams have built microrobots that allow catheters to navigate through the human body. He has also developed robotic finger joints and a silent, fully articulated neck motor that exceeds human capabilities. At UC San Diego, Friend plans to collaborate across disciplines to create groups of microrobots that work together,…
